FDA and CDC, with state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans infections linked to broccoli sprouts and microgreens. As of FDA's October 9, 2026 update, the case count provided by CDC is 32 illnesses and 3 hospitalizations, with no deaths, in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Illnesses began between July 7 and September 3, 2026. Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Moyie Springs, Idaho recalled broccoli sprouts on September 4 after a sprout sample analyzed by Montana officials matched the outbreak strain, and Washington State officials later matched sprout samples from a grocery store and a sick person's home. FDA is investigating this outbreak separately from an alfalfa sprout outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella.

On October 7, FDA reported that a seed sample it collected from the seed supplier tested positive and that whole genome sequencing matched the outbreak strain. The supplier recalled the seed lot, W4105, which led to recalls of sprouting seeds sold online nationwide by EAK Distribution of Casper, Wyoming (October 2), Eden Brothers of Arden, North Carolina (October 7) and Gardeners Basics of Spanish Fork, Utah (October 8). The companies reported no illnesses linked to their own products at the time of their announcements. FDA's investigation is ongoing.

What it means for labs

If your lab tests sprouting seed, sprouts or microgreens, this outbreak shows how one contaminated seed lot can reach growers and home sprouters across many states. Labs supporting sprout growers may want to confirm that seed lot numbers are recorded with every sample so a positive result can be traced to a lot quickly.

Who it affects

Sprout and microgreen growers, seed sellers, and consumers in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington
